The Nature Conservancy announced today that it has purchased 3,184 acres along the Hoh River near the Washington coast from the company Rayonier. The project, which will support public access and stewardship of the lands, was made possible with support from the Wyss Foundation, the Norcliffe Foundation, and other private donors and supporters.

The Wyss Foundation has joined the Grantham Foundation for the Environment and dozens of individual donors to support the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) Fund for Environmental Journalism.  The Wyss Foundation’s support is enabling a significant expansion of the Fund for Environmental Journalism.

With the support of the Wyss Foundation and other charitable partners, The Nature Conservancy today announced it has closed on the purchase of 117,152 acres of forests, rivers and wildlife habitat in the Lower Blackfoot River watershed of Montana. The land was purchased from Plum Creek for $85 million.

With the support of the Wyss Foundation and other charitable partners, The Nature Conservancy has closed on the purchase of 47,921 acres of forests, rivers and wildlife habitat in the Central Cascade Mountains of Washington.  The lands, which were purchased from Plum Creek Timber Company for $49 million, will be conserved for public use and enjoyment.

Today, October 21, 2014, Oceana announced that the Wyss Foundation will, over the next five years, provide up to $10 million in matching funds to help rebuild fisheries in Peru and Canada by supporting science-based policies that aim to both improve fishing and restore health to the world’s oceans.

The Wyss Foundation and a cohort of other philanthropic foundations today announced they have together committed $500,000 to a new fund that will provide immediate support for recreation and habitat restoration projects in and around the new San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, which is being designated Friday by President Obama.  

There aren’t many open landscapes left in the West where you can pretend to be an Oregon settler or California gold seeker, but the East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness is one of them.
