The Wyss Campaign for Nature has helped local indigenous communities, national governments, land trusts, and non-profit partners permanently protect nearly 90 million acres of land and more than 1.7 square kilometers of ocean – an area of land roughly the size of Finland and an area of ocean nearly the size of Mexico.

Nations have just finalized the most ambitious strategy to protect the planet’s biodiversity in recent history, ratifying a plan to safeguard at least 30 percent of the Earth’s surface, on land and at sea, by 2030 (30x30). This historic news comes more than four years after philanthropist and lifelong conservationist, Hansjörg Wyss, catalyzed a global campaign by launching the Wyss Campaign for Nature.

“In the past, I’ve called on fellow philanthropists to step up and confront the biodiversity crisis head on, and many have met the moment. Now, governments must do the same.”

Pledge increases Wyss’s total nature commitment to $1.5 billion before 2030 to accelerate the pace of conservation and protect 30 percent of the Earth’s surface by decade’s end.

Taylor Hopkins, Willy Pevec, Dana Pflughoeft, and Carly Thompson have been named the 2023 cohort of Wyss Scholars at the University of Michigan. Students were selected from the School for Environment and Sustainability and the Law School in recognition of their leadership potential in nonprofit and public sector conservation in the United States.

Hank Shell and Eli Savage have been named the 2023 Wyss Scholars at Lewis & Clark Law School. The Wyss Scholars Program, funded by the Wyss Foundation, seeks to identify and support a new generation of leaders focused on land conservation issues.

Jake Barker, Zane Weinberger, and Sarah Baer have been named the 2023 Wyss Scholars at Yale University. The prestigious scholarship program is sponsored by the Wyss Foundation and supports the graduate-level education of a new generation of leaders in U.S. land conservation.
